SCHAUMBURG
Schaumburg is located 29
miles northwest of Chicago's Loop yet it maintains an urban ambiance that sets
it apart from most suburban communities. Careful planning and managed
development has made Schaumburg into one of the most sought-after business
locations in the state. Huge companies such as Motorola, The Signature Group,
Zurich-American Insurance, Advantis, Ameritech call the community home as do
hundreds of other smaller companies. Retailers also find Schaumburg a great
place to do business. Woodfield Mall, at nearly 2.7 million square feet, is one
of the largest enclosed shopping centers in the United States.
Housing: The abundant
shopping, excellent schools, convenient transportation and good job market,
continue to attract buyers to the area. The majority of the houses were built
after 1970, and a variety of styles are available. Ranches, split-levels and
multifamily housing is popular.
Schools: Elementary
students attend District 54, Illinois' largest elementary district. An advanced
art program is available for district students who have special skills or an
interest in art. The district's science curriculum allows children to learn
through active participation. Schaumburg and J B Conant High Schools, District
211, are in the state's largest suburban high school district. The curriculum
offers more that 235 academic vocational and special education courses, as well
as a six-week summer school.
Transportation: The
Northwest Tollway (I-90) and Illinois 53 are easily accessible. Drive time to
the Loop is about 45 minutes. O'Hare Airport is 20 minutes away, while Midway
is an hour's drive. Metra commuters can board trains in Schaumburg, Palatine,
Roselle, and Arlington Heights. Locals can reach the Loop in 50 minutes, while
the express arrives in 40 minutes. Bus service is available.
PALATINE
Palatine is located 30
miles northwest of Chicago's Loop. It is a self-sufficient community which
boasts a flourishing downtown business in a small town atmosphere despite its
close proximity to 11 major shopping centers.
Housing: Palatine's
housing styles include Tudors, two-stories, ranches, colonials, victorians,
cape cods and custom-built homes. This wide range of design also covers various
ages, from brand new construction to historic, century-old structures. Though
the newer housing is popular, the older homes have also drawn their share of
attention from buyers who wish to preserve and restore a bit of
history.
Schools: Consolidated
School District 15 serves elementary students in Palatine. Teenagers in the
Palatine area enroll in High School District 211. Of the district's five
schools, two are in Palatine: William Fremd and Palatine high
schools.
Transportation:
Illinois Hwy. 53 borders Palatine on the east, connecting with the Northwest
Tollway (I-90) and the North-South Tollway (I-355). The Loop is an hour away.
Midway Airport is a 60 minute drive, while O'Hare is 20 minutes away. Commuters
can catch express rail service from Palatine to Chicago's Loop, which takes 40
minutes, while local trains take an hour. Bus service is
available.
ARLINGTON
HEIGHTS
Arlington Heights is 27
miles northwest of Chicago's Loop. It is a community that defines the word
"home". From its affordable housing to its educational opportunities to its
business climate, the village has built and maintained a high standard of
living. Arlington Heights has six separate office/industrial parks,
accommodating more than 300 businesses. It is also a popular shopping spot,
with a plethora of retail opportunities. Operating on a neighborhood park
premise, the village has five community centers, each with an outdoor pool,
gymnasium and meeting rooms. It also operates a racquet and fitness club, a
tennis club, a golf club, a walking/ bike path and dozens of athletic
fields.
Housing: Most of the
housing stock here is single-family. Most are custom homes. Predominant styles
include Colonials, ranches and split-levels.
Schools: Elementary
students attend districts 21, 23, 25, 57, and 59. Nine schools make up
Arlington Height's District 25. Students at the elementary level are given
instruction in fine arts, physical education and life skills in addition to
their regular curriculum. High School students attend District 214, spreading
out to Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, John Hersey and
Prospect high schools. The majority, however, attend either Buffalo Grove or
Hersey.
Transportation:
Commuters can reach the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) or the Northwest Tollway
(I-90) via Illinois 53. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the Loop, 15 minutes
to reach O'Hare and an hour to reach Midway. There are two Metra train stops in
the village. A trip to the Loop takes about 39 minutes express and 52 minutes
local. Local bus service is available.
Chicago's
O'Hare Airport is less than 30 minutes from most NW suburbs.
ELK GROVE
VILLAGE
Elk Grove is located 22
miles northwest of Chicago's Loop. It is the home of a huge industrial park,
the largest of its kind in North America. The community's industrial base keeps
property tax rates low and helps fund award-winning park district programs.
Over 3200 businesses operate from the industrial park, with a total of more
than 60,000 employees.
Housing: Much of the
village's original housing is located east of the Eisenhower Expressway (I290)
while newer homes are found west of Illinois 53. Styles include ranches,
split-levels, and two-stories.
Schools: Children
attend elementary school in districts 54 and 59. Elk Grove High School is in
District 214 and Conant High School is in District 211, which is the largest in
Illinois.
Transportation: Elk
Grove has convenient access to I-90, the Eisenhower (I-290) and Illinois 53.
Drive time to the Loop is 30 minutes. O'Hare Airport is only 10 minutes away,
while Midway Airport is an hour's drive. Commuters catch the Milwaukee Road
train in either Itasca or Medinah for a 45 minute trip to the Loop. Bus service
is available.
ROLLING
MEADOWS
Rolling Meadows is 30
miles Northwest of Chicago's Loop. Rolling Meadows is in an ideal location for
people needing convenient access to Chicago, O'Hare Airport and the industrial
sector in nearby Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village. Excellent schools, the park
district and library are added bonuses. There is an indoor ice skating rink
where figure skating and hockey teams practice and compete.
Housing: Single family
houses are in a variety of styles which include ranches, splits and
two-stories. Multifamily housing is also popular.
Schools: Rolling
Meadows is primarily served by District 15, while some students attend District
54 schools. Most teenagers attend Rolling Meadows High School in District 214.
Others attend Fremd High School in District 211. William Rainey Harper
Community College and several area universities are nearby. Rolling Meadows
also is home to the Clearbrook Center for the Handicapped.
Transportation:
Illinois 53, the Kennedy and Eisenhower expressways intersect at the village's
southwest corner. Drive time to the Loop is 35 minutes. O'Hare and Midway
airports are 15 and 55 minutes away, respectively. Rail commuters can catch the
Metra train line out of Arlington. The trip to the Loop takes 39 minutes on the
express trains and 52 to 60 minutes on the locals.
Metro Northwest and Milwaukee rail lines provide
commuter service to Chicago.
HOFFMAN
ESTATES
Residents of Hoffman
Estates, which is 30 miles northwest of Chicago's Loop, enjoy their
proximity to shopping, recreation and cultural events.
Housing: House hunters
can choose from a variety of home styles including Colonials, ranches,
split-levels, two-stories and custom-built homes. Most housing is from new to
30 years old. Multifamily housing is also very popular.
Schools: Elementary
districts 15 and 54 serve the community. Additional emphasis is placed on the
basics of reading, writing and math. Local teenagers attend either Conant,
Fremd, or Hoffman Estates high schools in District 211, the largest high school
district in the state. Some children attend Barrington High School District
220.
Transportation: It is a
50 minute drive to the Loop on the Northwest Tollway. Residents also have
access to Illinois 53 and the North-south Tollway (I-355) . O'Hare and Midway
airports are 25 and 60 minutes away, respectively. Commuters can catch Metra's
Milwaukee District train in Schaumburg, Hanover Park or Bartlett, for a 50
minute trip to the Loop. There is bus service to local commuter rail
stations.
BARTLETT
Bartlett is located
approximately 28 miles slightly northwest of Chicago's Loop. It maintains a
quiet ambiance compared to many suburbs. Bartlett was incorporated in 1891 and
its population has grown from a mere 360 in 1900 to 36,706 in 2000. What once
began as a 40-acre town site now covers an area 14.6 square miles with over 100
miles of streets. The Village lies in three counties, Cook, DuPage and Kane.
Bartlett's future is one of continued, controlled, well-planned
growth.
Schools: Students attend
District U-46, Illinois's largest unit district outside of the city of Chicago.
The mission statement for the district is: to provide an education that
nurtures and challenges all students to maximize their individual potential to
become responsible, productive, and contributing members of our community and
society. The District has created a partnership for excellence in learning
through a systematic process of change that benefits the students.
Transportation: The
Northwest Tollway (I-90) and Illinois 59 are easily accessible. Drive time to
the Loop is 50-60 minutes. O'Hare Airport is 30-45 minutes, while Midway is
about an hour's drive. Metra commuters can expect a 40-minute express ride on
the train while the regular route takes 55 minutes. Limited bus service is
available.
